Police identify man killed in shooting near Kellogg and Dugan
Hours before sunrise on April 11, two men suffering from gunshot wounds walked into a Wichita hospital. Within days, one would die from his injuries, while the other would be arrested for allegedly battering a police officer.
Wichita police said in a press release Tuesday that the fatal weekend shooting stemmed from a disturbance reported earlier that day near Kellogg and Dugan in west Wichita, though what led up to it remains unclear.
It began with reports of gunfire in the 6300 block of West Kellogg just before 2 a.m., the release said. In a parking lot, police found evidence of a disturbance and, while investigating, received a separate call about a walk-in shooting at a hospital.
Two men with gunshot wounds were admitted; a 54-year-old man who was seriously injured and a 37-year-old man who was critically injured.
The 37-year-old, identified by police as William Johnson of Wichita, died. The 54-year-old man, meanwhile, was treated and released from Ascension Via Christi St. Francis, booking records show, where he was arrested shortly after on suspicion of battery of a law enforcement officer.
“During the initial investigation, officers contacted a 54-year-old male outside of the hospital for questioning,” WPD information officer Kris Gupilan said in an email to the Eagle. “During that interaction, the individual pushed an officer, resulting in a charge of battery on a law enforcement officer. The officer was not injured.”
Anyone with information relating to the shooting is asked to contact investigators at 316-268-4407 or leave a tip anonymously via Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.
