Wichita teen who killed pregnant girlfriend found guilty at trial
A Wichita teen who shot his pregnant girlfriend in 2025, killing her and leaving the couple’s unborn baby with serious brain damage, was found guilty of murder, kidnapping and more by a Sedgwick County jury this week.
Matthew Criscenzo shot 20-year-old Naomi Oglesby in the head during an argument at his father’s house in the 700 block of South Laura, near Kellogg and Washington, on May 25, 2025.
Criscenzo’s father disarmed the 19-year-old and called 911. When paramedics arrived, they found Criscenzo giving Oglesby mouth-to-mouth according to court documents. A sergeant pulled him away, and Criscenzo reportedly said he “didn’t want to” and “didn’t mean to” shoot Oglesby.
“I just didn’t want her to go and I thought she was gonna leave me,” Criscenzo told police after the shooting, a probable cause affidavit read.
At the time of the shooting, Oglesby was 37 weeks pregnant with the couple’s second daughter; their first child, Yazmyn Oglesby-Criscenzo, died in 2024 at six weeks from sudden infant death syndrome.
Medical staff at Wesley Medical Center performed an emergency C-section on Oglesby and delivered her baby, Zy’nia Rayne Oglesby. The newborn then started having seizures, and had to be intubated, court records described. Doctors later determined she was suffering from severe brain trauma because she did not get enough oxygen after Oglesby was shot.
Oglesby was pronounced dead by doctors only a few minutes after Zy’nia was born. Family told Eagle reporters Oglesby had been looking forward to her second chance to become a girl mom.
Criscenzo, now 20, pleaded not guilty to four charges, including kidnapping, aggravated battery and two separate counts of first degree murder — one premeditated and one in the attempted commission of a kidnapping.
After four days of testimony and several hours of deliberation, a jury found Criscenzo guilty on all four charges. The jury also determined the first three counts, two different first degree murder charges and a kidnapping charge, were found to be acts of domestic violence.
“This case has been a tragedy for the Wichita community and, most importantly, for the family of Naomi Oglesby,” Chief Assistant District Attorney Jason Roach said in a press statement published by the district attorney’s office. “We thank the jury for their diligent service and careful consideration of the evidence presented throughout this trial.”
Criscenzo’s sentencing has not yet been scheduled, but his attorney has requested he be sentenced on or prior to March 9, 2026.
