A Wichita man who was sent to live at a transitional center after being released from prison for possessing child porn has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison after staff found a cellphone under his mattress containing nude photos of minors.

Jacob Navarrette, 34, of Wichita pleaded guilty and was convicted by a federal judge in Oklahoma for possession of child pornography in April 2020, court records show. He had been incarcerated for several years when he was sent to temporarily live and carry out the remainder of his sentence, which included 10 years of supervised release, at a Wichita transitional center.

He was at the center on October 2, 2024, when a staff member found a contraband cellphone under his mattress, a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Kansas said. On it was an instant messaging app containing messages between Navarrette and a 17-year-old boy. At Navarrette’s request, the minor had sent explicit photos of himself to Navarrette, who later admitted to installing the app and using it to speak sexually with adults and minors.

“Unfortunately, Navarrette was back to committing child sex abuse crimes before he finished serving time for the offense that landed him in prison in the first place,” U.S. Attorney Ryan Kriegshauser was quoted saying in the release. “This case is an example of why continued monitoring of sex offenders is crucial to protect our society and our children.”

Navarrette pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography and was sentenced to 120 months, or 10 years, in prison on March 23. At his request, the court recommended sending him to a Bureau of Prisons facility in Seagoville, Texas, to participate in sex offender treatment.
