An Ellsworth County child is dead and another is in critical condition after the siblings were shot by a third child with a shotgun.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is assisting the Ellsworth County Sheriff’s Office in its inquiry of Saturday afternoon’s fatal shooting, which was reported around 3:15 p.m. outside Brookville, about a 100 miles north of Wichita, a KBI press release read.

The shooting happened after a young child picked up a loaded, unsecured shotgun and fired it, striking a 5-year-old girl and her 8-year-old brother, the state law enforcement agency said.

The 5-year-old died at the scene of the shooting, a home south of the intersection of Kansas Highway 141 and Avenue N. The 8-year-old boy was flown to a Wichita hospital where he remains in critical condition, a KBI press release said.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
