Kansas couple fined more than $70K over mobile home sales, DA says
Two local mobile home dealers have been ordered to pay more than $70,000 in restitution, penalties and other fees following a customer complaint.
A default judgment was entered against Zachary and Krystle Storm, who do business as Twister City Homes, the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release Monday. The office’s consumer protection division, which investigated the complaint, alleged the couple committed five violations of the Kansas Consumer Protection Act.
The violations include “acting as mobile home dealers and brokers without proper licensure, failing to deliver titles in a timely manner, and overcharging for lot rent,” the release says.
In Kansas, mobile home dealers must be licensed by the Kansas Department of Revenue and must turn over mobile home titles within 30 days.
The Kansas Consumer Protection Act makes it illegal for any business to engage in “unconscionable” and “deceptive” practices.
“Under the court order, the Storms must pay $18,951 in restitution to the consumer and $50,000 in civil penalties, in addition to court costs and investigation fees,” the news release says. “The court also ordered the couple to cease business operations until they are properly licensed and the full judgment has been paid.”
