Wichita area roofer banned from doing work, ordered to pay $511k, DA’s office says
A Goddard man and his roofing company have been ordered to pay nearly $511,000 after allegedly committing 28 violations under the Kansas Consumer Protection Act, including failing to finish projects he was paid to do, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office and court records.
He also failed to pull permits and skipped inspections, the DA’s office said.
Tyler Sims and his company, Flint Hills Roofing Co., have been banned until the penalties are paid. The penalties include $36,558 in restitution, $470,000 in civil penalties and court and investigative fees. The default judgment was issued after Sims did not respond to court orders.
“Several roofs had to be partially or fully replaced to meet building codes,” the DA’s office said in a news release Tuesday about the work Sims’ company did. “In one case, Sims and Flint Hills replaced a metal roof using water-damaged, moldy plywood and heavy asphalt shingles. The weight of the materials rendered the structure unsafe to enter. When an insurance company requested two additional estimates, Sims provided one from a defunct company he formerly owned and forged a second using another company’s logo without permission.”
The cases listed in a complaint filed by the DA’s office in October list four cases, all in 2024, where Sims’ took money for a job that he didn’t complete or where work was done improperly. Three of the cases were for clients in Wichita; one was in rural Sedgwick County.
Sims had a license with the Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department until the end of 2024, court records say. His business had its status on the Kansas Attorney General’s roofing registry revoked as of July 31, 2025, because of failure to renew registration, court records say.
Sims’ business is also mentioned in six other civil cases filed since 2022, court records show.
