DA charges Wichita man with child abuse after 1-year-old critically injured
Prosecutors have charged a 30-year-old Wichita man with one count of child abuse after a 1-year-old was hospitalized with critical injuries earlier this week.
Kevin Dilynn Mitchell is accused of causing “great bodily harm, abusive head trauma, permanent disability or disfigurement” to the child “on or about” Dec. 16, a complaint filed Friday in Sedgwick County District Court shows. The exact nature of the child’s injuries has not yet been disclosed.
Mitchell was scheduled to make a first appearance in court on the charge Friday afternoon. A protective order bars him from having any contact with the victim, a woman and any child younger than 16, court records show.
Wichita police have said first responders were already treating the unresponsive 1-year-old child in the 5500 block of South Handley when officers arrived around 5:40 p.m. Tuesday. That child and a 6-month-old who was also in the home were both taken to a Wichita hospital for treatment.
The children were among five in the house at the time. They were all placed into police protective custody.
Mitchell is being held in the Sedgwick County Jail in lieu of $75,000 bond in the abuse case.
