Wichita police are investigating a suspected child abuse incident after a 1-year-old was rushed to a hospital Tuesday evening with critical injuries. Police have since made one arrest, and five children have been placed in protective custody.

Wichita police arrived at a home in the 5500 block of South Handley around 5:40 p.m. on Dec. 16 where first responders were treating an unresponsive 1-year-old child. The child was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Five children, ranging from 6 months old to 9 years old, were inside the home at the time of the incident, a press release from the department read.

“In addition to the 1-year-old, the 6-month-old was also taken to the hospital for medical treatment,” the release read.

Police later arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of child abuse.

All five children, public information officer Kris Gupilan wrote in the release, have been placed in protective custody.

“Due to the sensitive nature of the case and the ages of the children involved, no further details will be released at this time,” Gupilan wrote.
