Deputy charged with repeatedly hitting handcuffed man at Wichita hospital, WPD says
A Sedgwick County sheriff’s deputy has been charged with misdemeanor battery for repeatedly hitting a handcuffed man several times at a hospital in September, the Wichita Police Department says.
Brett Anderson has been placed on administrative leave “pending the outcome of the criminal case,” the department said in a news release Monday. He is a six-year veteran of the sheriff’s office.
The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office filed the charge Monday, and Anderson has been summoned to court for a first appearance on Dec. 1, court records show. No defense lawyer was listed for him in court records on Monday afternoon.
The police department said its WPD Alert Team conducted the use-of-force investigation at the request of Sheriff Jeff Easter “following a supervisory review of body-worn camera footage by the Sheriff’s Office.”
“The incident occurred on Sept. 11, 2025, at a local hospital, where a handcuffed man was struck several times by Deputy Anderson during an encounter,” the news release says. “WPD investigators presented the case to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office, which has charged Deputy Anderson with one count of misdemeanor battery.”
A WPD report shows the incident happened around 2 a.m. Sept. 11 at a medical facility at 13th and Tyler Road in Wichita. Wesley West ER and Diagnostic Center is in that area.
The WPD report says the handcuffed man was in the custody of the sheriff’s office at the time.
The criminal complaint filed against Anderson accuses him of “unlawfully and knowingly” causing “physical contact with another person ... in a rude, insulting or angry manner.”
The DA’s Office said Tuesday that it would not release further details due to “the ongoing nature of the investigation and impending legal proceedings.” More information about what happened are likely contained in a probable cause affidavit, which the court can release on request.
“This investigation addresses only the criminal component,” the Wichita police news release says. “The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office Professional Standards Unit will conduct an internal review in accordance with department policy.”
