Man who was in extremely critical condition after QuikTrip shooting has died
A 23-year-old Wichita man who was in extremely critical condition after a shooting at a QuikTrip last week has died, Wichita police say.
A 16-year-old who was initially booked into juvenile detention on suspicion of aggravated battery remains in custody.
Knowledge McPherson of Wichita died Oct. 1, police said in a news release Tuesday. He had been shot multiple times in his upper body at the Pawnee and Meridian QuikTrip shortly before 3 a.m. on Sept. 30, initial reports said.
The shooting happened after an argument between several people turned physical, according to a media advisory from the police department.
“During the altercation, the suspect pulled out a firearm and shot McPherson,” the press release said.
According to Wichita police, a passerby attempted life-saving measures until McPherson was taken to a hospital.
He underwent surgery, but remained in extremely critical condition before dying on Oct. 1, police said in the news release.
The 16-year-old was initially arrested on suspicion of criminal discharge of a firearm, juvenile possession of a firearm and aggravated battery. Police said charges will be amended after consultation with the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.
The department said the investigation into the shooting death is still ongoing. Police encourage anyone with information about the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.
