Hays KS police officer fatally shot during domestic violence call, city says
The city of Hays says one of its police officers was fatally shot in the line of duty overnight while responding to a domestic violence call.
The officer’s name was not immediately released.
Hays Public Relations Manager James Bell said the officer was shot after responding to a call in the 2200 block of Downing Street at 10:58 p.m. Saturday.
The suspected shooter, whom the Kansas Bureau of Investigation later identified as Zane Wickham, 34, of Hays, was also killed.
“Upon arrival, the suspect fired at the responding officer,” Bell said in a news release. “The suspect was pronounced dead on the scene. The officer was transported to a local hospital and succumbed to injuries sustained at the scene.”
Authorities say there are no other suspects being sought in connection with the shooting. No other details were immediately released Sunday.
The Kansas Bureau of investigation is investigating the shooting and is expected to release more information as it becomes available.
