A 31-year-old Kansas woman will spend the next 24-plus years in prison for killing her husband, a U.S. Army soldier, at their home on a Fort Riley military installation, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Kansas said Friday.

Margaret E. Shafe was sentenced to 293 months in prison after fatally shooting her husband, Greg Shafe, in the face in front of their two young daughters in February 2024. A federal jury found her guilty of second-degree murder in February of this year.

“Margaret Shafe deserves to go to prison. The evidence in this case showed she murdered her husband while the couple’s two young daughters were in the home,” U.S. Attorney Ryan Kriegshauser said in a news release. “The court heard brave testimony from Ms. Shafe’s own daughter, who witnessed her mother shoot her stepfather in a fury.”

Fort Riley is an Army base in north-central Kansas.
