WPD arrests 23-year-old in N. Broadway shooting, one of 3 Labor Day killings

Wichita police have arrested a 23-year-old man in connection to a fatal shooting outside a North Broadway liquor store on Monday, one of three killings on Labor Day.

Police did not identify the 23-year-old, explain his connection to the shooting, or say what charges he would potentially face in what Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan described as an “extremely complicated crime scene” near Discount Liquor at 29th North and Broadway.

Four people were shot, including a man police identified as 19-year-old Mario Gonzalez, who died.

The shooting followed a disturbance inside the liquor store that is located in a strip mall parking lot that includes a Dollar General and Farmers Market.

A female liquor store employee apparently called a male co-worker from the Farmers Market, who brought a friend to assist in removing two men — including Gonzalez — from the property. A shooting in the parking lot followed.

A retired Wichita police lieutenant saw a vehicle leave the scene and followed it until officers could stop it near the 800 block of North Main. A 17-year-old male passenger in that car was identified as an associate of Gonzalez. He had a gunshot wound to the hand.

An unidentified 46-year-old man and the unidentified 23-year-old who was arrested were also shot during the confrontation.

Police have said they don’t believe the three Labor Day shootings that injured seven and killed three people were connected.
