Four people shot, one fatally, near 29th North and Broadway
Four people were shot, one fatally, in an altercation near 29th North and Broadway on Monday afternoon.
“Right now this is a extremely complicated crime scene,” said Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan at a 4:30 media briefing. “The detectives are moving very slowly and meticulously so we get it right.”
Chief public information officer Andrew Ford said a man and possibly his friend were in a liquor store near the intersection just after 2 p.m. on Monday when there was a disturbance in the store that involved a female employee.
He said the female employee called a male co-worker from the Farmer’s Market next to Dollar General, which are in the same area. The man brought a friend to assist moving the two other men from the property, which is when shooting began in the parking lot.
The deceased is the person that the employee had an issue with inside the store, he said.
Police were called regarding a shooting at 2:11 p.m., and the deceased was pronounced dead at 2:18 p.m.
After the incident, a black Buick left the scene, and a retired police lieutenant, whom Sullivan said “did a fantastic job and . . . did it very safely,” followed it and alerted police to it.
An officer at the scene where that vehicle was stopped said “officers intercepted that vehicle roughly at 13th and Main.”
“We got the vehicle stopped here in the 800 block of North Main.”
Ford said it’s believed the driver had been shot in the hand.
He did not share information on any arrests.
Ford said there aren’t many details yet, but he said police are confident that there is no existing danger to the public.
There are no details yet about the people involved in the shooting except that they’re a variety of ages.
