A 29-year-old Wichita man is in custody after a shooting Wednesday night that killed a woman and led police to search for a missing child. The 8-year-old was found safe when police pulled over and arrested the man.

Emergency services received a call around 11:30 p.m. from a woman at Longbranch Mobile Home Park, according to a Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson. The woman said someone in her home was threatening to shoot her.

The call-taker heard gunshots and then silence on the line.

Deputies arrived at the home and found the woman, 49, who had been shot. She died at the scene.

According to the spokesperson, deputies “were able to develop information on a possible suspect and a vehicle.” They also learned that the suspect had taken with him an 8-year-old boy when he left the home.

Sedgwick County law enforcement shared information about the suspect and vehicle with other law enforcement in the area.

The vehicle was found in Butler County and stopped on U.S. 54 east of Augusta. They took the suspect into custody and found the child in the vehicle, unharmed.

The Sheriff’s Office said it would provide further information in a press conference Thursday afternoon.
