Wichita parolee, 31, arrested on suspicion of murder in July 6 killing, records show
A 31-year-old Wichita man on parole has been arrested in a July 6 homicide, according to arrest records released Wednesday morning.
The man was arrested on suspicion of intentional, second-degree murder and criminal possession of a firearm used in a crime by a felon in the killing of 32-year-old Kelly Black of Wichita. The suspect was released from prison and put on parole in February, according to Kansas Department of Corrections records.
The Wichita Eagle does not identify suspects before they are charged.
Police were called at 5:51 p.m. on July 6 to the 7000 block of East Lincoln and found Black, who was homeless, lying on the ground with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital where he died.
The suspect has previous convictions in Sedgwick County for cases from 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2021, court records show. In the 2018 case, he was convicted for aggravated robbery and aggravated battery, KDOC records show. The 2021 case was for fleeing or eluding police with five or more moving violations, KDOC records show.
He had been in prison from May 2020 until his release into Sedgwick County on Feb. 4, 2025, KDOC records show.
During his time in prison, he received 37 disciplinary reports, including for fighting, contraband, insubordination/disrespect of corrections officers, KDOC records show. He also obtained an associate’s degree while in prison, records show.
