Boy, 14, takes family member’s gun and shoots at officer and others, Wichita police say
A 14-year-old boy was charged Tuesday after allegedly stealing a gun from a family member and shooting in the direction of multiple people and a police officer while hitting several vehicles around downtown Wichita, according to police Capt. Aaron Moses and court records.
The Goddard boy was charged with aggravated assault of an officer, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, three counts of criminal discharge of a weapon at an occupied vehicle, criminal use of a weapon, theft of a firearm and criminal possession of a weapon by a juvenile offender, court records show.
Police responded at 6:54 p.m. Sunday to Kellogg and Broadway to calls about the boy walking in the area after allegedly taking a firearm from a 26-year-old woman who is his family member.
“Upon arrival, officers located the suspect, who pointed the firearm in the direction of the officers and discharged multiple rounds, striking several vehicles,” Moses said. “Following a brief foot pursuit, the 14-year-old was taken into custody and booked on multiple felony charges.”
He was arrested in the 200 block of East English, which is close to Century II Performing Arts & Convention Center.
Moses said the victims of aggravated assault include the 26-year-old woman who had her firearm taken, a 33-year-old woman, a 38-year-old man, a 40-year-old man, all from Wichita, and a Wichita police officer.
