A Wichita man has been sentenced to more than 12 years in prison in a deadly parking lot shooting in which his teenage son is also facing charges.

Tyree Jackson Sr., 42, pleaded guilty in November to an amended count of second-degree reckless murder in the March 21, 2024, shooting death of 20-year-old Jaden C. Wilson at M&M Smoke Shop, 2211 N. Grove in Wichita. Sedgwick County District Judge Jeffrey Goering ordered Jackson to serve the 146-month sentence on Friday, said Dan Dillon, a spokesman for the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

Jackson’s son, 18-year-old Tyree Jackson Jr., is also charged in Wilson’s death. The younger Jackson is awaiting a June jury trial after pleading not guilty last month to first-degree murder, criminal discharge of a firearm and criminal possession of a weapon, court records show. He was 17 when the shooting happened but is being prosecuted as an adult.

Wilson was killed while sitting in his girlfriend’s car at the smoke shop after he and others went there to shop. Court records say the Jacksons pulled up in a minivan and the younger Jackson got out with a gun, walked around the front of the car, shouted and then fired repeatedly through the windshield and passenger door at Wilson, a former friend. The shooting happened around 5:30 p.m.

The elder Jackson told police he went to the smoke shop for cigarettes after picking up his son from his grandmother’s house and that when his son saw Wilson, he claimed Wilson had robbed him sometime in the past. The affidavit says the surveillance footage from the smoke shop appears to show the elder Jackson gesturing for his son “to go around the front of the van towards the victim’s car,” and getting out of his vehicle.

Police said in the affidavit that the surveillance footage also appears to show the elder Jackson with a handgun, although he claimed he was only holding a cellphone. The elder Jackson also claimed the shooting started after Wilson reached forward for something in the car.

The younger Jackson ran off into an adjacent neighborhood after the shooting while his dad drove away in the van. The teenager’s grandmother later took him to the Sedgwick County Jail to turn himself in, the affidavit says.

Police found a total of 12 shell casings around the car. There was also a .22-caliber gun under Wilson’s body but “no evidence” suggesting it had been fired in the parking lot, the affidavit says.

An autopsy determined Wilson had been shot six times in his left shoulder and neck, and once each in his left side and right wrist. He died at the scene.

Tyree Jackson Sr., who had been free on bond, was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail after Friday’s sentencing hearing, an online log of inmates shows.
