Parolee killed 69-year-old man in south Wichita apartment. He’s headed back to prison
A 38-year-old parolee has been ordered to serve life in prison for murdering a 69-year-old man at a south Wichita apartment in 2023.
Jeremy Tyshawn Miles, of Wichita, was convicted by a jury on Nov. 4 of first-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon in the Aug. 30, 2023, shooting death of James Gibson at Seneca Place Apartments, 2116 S. Seneca. Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office spokesman Dan Dillon said Miles must serve 586 months — more than 48 years — before he would be eligible for parole again.
Wichita police and court records say Miles went to Gibson’s apartment and shot him a dozen times while they were inside shortly before 11 a.m. A witness who accompanied Miles told authorities Miles went to Gibson’s home to collect $300 that Gibson apparently owed him.
Gibson died at the scene.
Miles has claimed he wasn’t responsible for Gibson’s death, that he was at his own home when the killing happened, court records say. He has prior convictions for aggravated robbery, criminal possession of a firearm by a felon and other crimes and had gotten out of prison days before the fatal shooting, The Eagle reported previously.
Sedgwick County District Judge Jeffrey Goering sentenced Miles on Tuesday.
