Man won’t be charged in deadly shooting of another Wichita man. Here’s why
A 19-year-old Wichita man will not face charges in the fatal shooting of another man earlier this month, Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett said.
Damarqua Keyleon Kendell Edwards was arrested on April 9 on suspicion of intentional and premeditated first-degree murder in the death of 19-year-old Dontis Carter, Wichita police said.
The DA’s office reviewed evidence from the case on April 11 and determined that Edwards acted in self-defense. Charges will not be filed in the shooting, Bennett said.
Officers responded April 9 to a shooting call at an apartment complex in the 2600 block of South Emporia. They found Carter shot multiple times. He died at the scene.
Police said Edwards and Carter knew each and got into an argument at the time of the shooting. Carter was visiting an acquaintance at the apartment complex.
Edwards was arrested later that night during a traffic stop at Harry and Hydraulic, near his home. He was a passenger in a vehicle with two other women, police said.
