Police: Wichita teen killed in ‘targeted incident,’ another teen arrested in killing

Update, April 25: Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett said the suspect in this case will not face charges because he acted in self defense.

A Wichita teen was killed Tuesday night in a “targeted incident” at a south Wichita apartment complex and another Wichita teen has been arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder, Wichita police Lt. Aaron Moses said Wednesday.

Dontis Carter, 19, died at the scene after police were called to a shooting at 9:39 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 2600 block of South Emporia and found him shot multiple times.

Damarqua Keyleon Kendell Edwards was arrested in an 11:44 p.m. traffic stop at Harry and Hydraulic, near his home, according to an arrest report and police. The 19-year-old was arrested on suspicion of intentional and premediated first-degree murder. He was a passenger in a vehicle with two females.

“Preliminary information suggests that it was a targeted incident, as the suspect and the victim were acquainted and engaged in a dispute at the time of the shooting,” Moses said in a news release.

Moses said police have recovered a firearm.

Carter was visiting an acquaintance at the apartment complex when the shooting happened.

This is at least the city’s 16th homicide so far this year, according to reports from police. There were seven at this time last year.
