Four inmates at Sedgwick County Jail overdose on suspected opioid
Four inmates at Sedgwick County Jail are expected to recover after a suspected opioid overdose, according to the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.
EMS took the men to the hospital around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday after jail staff responded to a pod and gave them nalaxone, which is used to treat an opioid overdose.
“The inmates responded positively to the Naloxone,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release. “All four inmates were transported to a local area hospital for additional treatment; it is believed all four will be released from the hospital following treatment. The substance that was ingested by the inmates is unconfirmed but is believed to contain an Opiate.”
Sheriff’s office spokesperson Hanna Abou-Faissal said the inmates “were at various stages of consciousness when found.” One of the inmates was taken to the hospital in critical condition; two in serious and one in minor condition.
Keeping drugs out of the jail has been an ongoing problem.
