A 74-year-old Newton woman has life-threatening injuries after her husband shot her overnight, authorities say.

The woman, who was not identified in an email from the city of Newton announcing the shooting, was rushed by ambulance to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Her husband, 70-year-old Edward L. Altum, was arrested on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder and is being held in the Harvey County Jail, an online log of inmates shows.

Newton police responded to the shooting around 1:45 a.m. Friday at a house in the 2000 block of Terrace Drive, where Altum told officers “his wife had been shot” but refused to answer any other questions, the email says. Authorities found a gun at the scene.

The email gave no details about what led to the shooting, other than calling it an incident of “apparent domestic violence.” The wife’s current condition at the hospital wasn’t included.

“The investigation is ongoing,” the email says.
