Reno County DA: No charges to be filed against Hutchinson police officers
No charges will be filed against Hutchinson police officers in the fatal shooting of Jonathan P. Wilson at his home in June, the Reno County District Attorney’s Office said Thursday.
Reno County District Attorney Keith E. Schroeder said in a news release that officers “were completely justified in the actions they took” on June 23.
According to the release, officers were dispatched to the scene knowing the man had confessed to a murder and was armed with weapons.
“When officers arrived he behaved erratically inside the residence where three small children were located,” Schroeder said.
Officers were unable to persuade the man to come outside, and were able to remove the children to safety.
“Wilson then essentially attacked officers by throwing objects and knives at them,” Schroeder said in the release. “Self-inflicted cut marks strongly suggest Wilson was ready to end his life. A single bullet accomplished that goal.”
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation, which included video recordings related to the incident.
“All officers perceived the same threat and fired at the same time,” Schroeder said. “The shooting, although tragic, appears justified under Kansas law.”
Wilson had been identified as a suspect in the death of a woman whose body was found in a small creek in northwest Reno County earlier that week.
