Wichita police are investigating a shooting that hospitalized a 1-year-old girl early Sunday morning near downtown.

Police officers responded to a walk-in shooting victim call around 4:40 a.m. at a hospital after the 44-year-old father of the infant arrived with his daughter, who had suffered a gunshot wound to her abdomen, police spokesperson Juan Rebolledo said in a news release.

The girl underwent surgery and remains in critical but stable condition, according to Rebolledo.

Police later learned the shooting happened in a home in the 1000 block of North Main street.

The father took the girl into the hospital within minutes of the shooting, Rebolledo said.

Detectives are speaking with the father, who is fully cooperating with the investigation, to determine what led up to the shooting, the release said.

Police say this was not a random incident and are looking for a person of interest who could have been involved in the shooting.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting is encouraged to call WPD detectives at 316-268-4407 or Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.
