Sheriff’s office identifies inmate who died in Sedgwick County Jail on Monday morning

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office has identified an inmate who died Monday morning at the jail as 40-year-old Michael O’ Neill of Wichita.

Jail staff found O’Neill unresponsive in his cell around 7:30 a.m. Medical staff, fire and EMS were called, but life-saving efforts were unsuccessful, a news release said.

The Sheriff’s Office investigations unit and the Kansas Bureau of Investigations is looking into the circumstances of O’Neill’s death. An autopsy will done at the Sedgwick County Forensic Center, the release added.

O’Neill was was booked into the jail in August 2022 on suspicion of aggravated battery, aggravated burglary and theft, according to the release.

The death is at least the fifth of an inmate at the jail this year. The others died on Jan. 20, Jan. 25, April 6 and Aug. 24.

Two inmates died in custody in 2021.
