Man dies at Sedgwick County Jail in second in-custody death of 2022, sheriff says

A man who was in custody at the Sedgwick County Jail died on Tuesday.

Pierre Collins, 34, of Wichita, was found unresponsive in his cell, sheriff’s spokesperson Benjamin Blick said.

After unsuccessful life-saving measures, Collins was pronounced dead at 10:25 p.m. This is the second in-custody death of 2022.

Collins was not positive for COVID-19 and there were no signs of a struggle in the cell, Blick said in a phone call.

Collins had been in custody since May 2019 on one count of aggravated kidnapping, two counts of aggravated domestic battery and two counts of domestic battery, according to a press release.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has been contacted to investigate.
