Wichita man shot brother in backyard during fight over friends, music, affidavit says

A 62-year-old Wichita man charged with trying to kill his younger brother in the backyard of their Oaklawn neighborhood home last month pulled the trigger during a fight over music and household company, according to an arrest affidavit released Tuesday.

Phoukhong Khamvongsa told law enforcement who interviewed him about the April 25 shooting that he pointed the gun and fired at his 55-year-old brother “because they were having an argument about Khamvongsa having friends over . . . to play music,” the affidavit says.

The shooting happened around 5:23 p.m. in the 4500 block of south Meadowview, near 47th South and K-15.

Khamvongsa told authorities that after his brother collapsed, he walked into the house and tossed the .22-caliber revolver behind a television in his bedroom closet, the affidavit says. Investigators found it there later.

Deputies responding to a neighbor’s 911 call about a disturbance at the address heard music coming from the backyard and saw Khamvongsa walking out of his front door with blood on his face and at least one hand. He told the deputies his brother was in the backyard, the affidavit says.

Deputies found the brother alive but lying on the ground with gunshot wounds to his abdomen and back.

Before he was taken to the hospital, the affidavit says the brother told a deputy that Khamvongsa had “shot him several times,” causing critical injuries. Video surveillance cameras in the area recorded two gunshots that occurred about 10 seconds apart, according to the document.

Khamvongsa has been charged with one count of attempted first-degree premeditated murder. His next court date is May 23.
