Wichita man in serious condition after being shot by police in Andover, KBI says
A police-involved shooting at a Butler County self-storage facility late Wednesday night left a Wichita man in serious condition, according to Melissa Underwood, spokeswoman for the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
Nicholas T. Waggoner, 25, was taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita for treatment after the shooting, reported around 10:45 p.m. at 1009 W. Highway 54 in Andover. He underwent surgery at the hospital and was “in serious but stable condition” on Thursday, Underwood said by email.
No officers were harmed in Wednesday’s shooting.
Four Andover Police Department officers went to storage facility around 10:40 p.m. after a person called 911 to report “a suspicious person” inside one of the units, the KBI said in a news release. Authorities said Waggoner told the officers that the unit belonged to a family member.
But when police patted him down, they discovered a “severed padlock” on him, the KBI says.
“Officers requested Waggoner’s driver’s license and allowed him to get into a Ford F-150 pickup truck to retrieve it,” according to the news release. “After he entered the pickup truck, he put the vehicle into reverse and quickly backed up in the direction of officers.”
“One officer fired one round at Waggoner, striking him,” the KBI said. “The truck then crashed off a steep embankment.”
Police arrested Waggoner and administered first aid until emergency medical services personnel arrived to drive him to the hospital.
The KBI says it plans to conduct “a thorough and independent investigation” into the shooting that will be turned over the the Butler County Attorney’s Office for review.
“This investigation is ongoing. No further information will be released at this time,” the KBI said Thursday.
