Wichita diner employee fatally shot outside of restaurant where he works, WPD says
Wichita police say the city’s latest homicide victim is a local diner employee who was shot overnight at the restaurant where he works.
Monzell Brocks, 45, of Wichita was at the Denny’s at 4024 E. Harry in southeast Wichita when he was fatally shot outside of the restaurant around 2:30 a.m. Thursday. Wichita police spokesman Officer Charley Davidson said before the shooting, Brocks had sat and talked with a table of “several males and females” who had arrived at the restaurant sometime overnight.
“As the group began to leave, Brocks went outside as well and shots were fired striking him and causing his fatal injuries,” Davidson said in an emailed news release.
He died at a Wichita hospital where he was taken for treatment.
“Detectives have recovered illegal drugs, two handguns, and shell casings during their investigation, and detectives are still working to learn all the details of what occurred,” Davidson said in the release, adding:
“This is not believed to be a random incident and the investigation is ongoing.”

Brocks is the city’s 48th homicide victim of the year. The Wichita Police Department considers 39 of those killings criminal in nature. The rest were deemed accidental or justified.
