Teenage boys pulled guns during fight with teen girls, killing one, WPD says
Wichita police say one teenage girl is dead and another was hurt in a fight that turned deadly when two teenage boys pulled guns and fired at them late Sunday night in a neighborhood near Central and Hillside.
Both of the teenage girls were hit by bullets, Wichita police say.
One of them, 16-year-old Brandi Williams, was found unresponsive in the front yard of a home in the 900 block of North Volutsia and was taken to a nearby hospital where she died.
The other, an 18-year-old woman, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released.
Wichita police in a Monday news release said several adults and kids were gathered at the home “when an argument started” between the teenage girls and two teenage boys, 14 and 16, around 10:30 p.m.
“During the argument, the males produced firearms and began firing in the direction of the two females,” the release says. “As a result, Williams and the 18-year-old female were both struck by gunfire.”
Police did not say what the fight was over. But officers found and arrested the boys allegedly responsible for the shooting and booked them into the local juvenile detention facility on suspicion of murder, the release says.
Authorities plan to present the case to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office, which will determine what formal charges might be filed.
“While we have another sad and tragic life lost too soon, we’ve been highlighting the increase in juvenile crime for the last fifteen months,” Wichita police Chief Gordon Ramsay said in the release.
“Families and community members must take note of this disturbing trend and be as involved as possible to help keep our youth safe.”
