Teen killed in weekend drug-related shooting; suspect at large, Wichita police say

Wichita police say a 17-year-old was killed over the weekend in a shooting in the 1300 block of West Walker, near Seneca between McCormick and Harry.

Officers sent to the address around 7 p.m. Saturday found Diego Benitez of Wichita dead from multiple gunshot wounds. Police say he was shot several times by an unknown person but that the violence isn’t random. Investigators think drugs are part of the motive for the homicide but gave no other details.

There had been no arrests in the case as of Sunday afternoon. Police are “following up on leads and are asking for the public’s help” to identify the shooter, according to a Police Department release.

Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to leave a tip with Wichita police detectives at 316-268-4407, with Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111 or with the See Something, Say Something hotline at 316-519-2282.
