Man gets 10 years in prison in child sex case
A Sedgwick County Judge this week imposed a more than 10-year prison sentence on a Wichita man convicted of soliciting a 15-year-old to engage in sex acts.
Jose A. Navarro, 41, will serve a 122-month sentence on one count of aggravated indecent solicitation of a child and a 17-month sentence on one count of aggravated intimidation of a witness. The terms will run concurrently, Sedgwick County District Court records show.
In issuing the term, District Judge Richard Ballinger denied a defense motion to grant Navarro lesser punishment than recommended under Kansas sentencing guidelines. He also ordered Navarro to register as a sex offender and be under post-release supervision for life.
Navarro was originally charged with three counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child under 14 — Jessica’s Law crimes — and one count of indecent liberties with a child last October.
He pleaded guilty to the amended counts in August.
Court records show Navarro was on parole in two Finney County cases when he committed his most recent crimes. Those cases, from 1991, include convictions for attempted first-degree murder and aggravated robbery, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.
