Driver accused of hitting woman in downtown Wichita crosswalk jailed after pursuit
Wichita police say a driver is in jail after he hit a woman in a downtown crosswalk with a truck then led officers on a chase that ended when he crashed into a tree.
Dalton Lee Drew, 27, of Wichita, was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of a number of crimes related to Tuesday’s hit-and-run collision including evading and eluding law enforcement and reckless driving. He was also arrested on outstanding warrants from Nevada.
Police, in a news release, said two detectives saw Drew hit a 59-year-old woman with a red GMC Sonoma as she was using a crosswalk at the East Douglas and North Main intersection about 1 p.m. Police say instead of stopping, Drew turned south on Main Street from westbound Douglas and continued driving.
Police found the truck exiting westbound Kellogg onto North Meridian and tried to stop it.
“Drew refused and led officer on a pursuit,” the news release said. “The pursuit ended after Drew lost control of the truck and struck a tree.”
Police say Drew ran from the truck after the crash and was arrested without further trouble in the backyard of a nearby home, in the 100 block of South Clara.
The woman who was hit in the crosswalk suffered minor injuries. Officer Kevin Wheeler said the detectives who witnessed the collision saw it happen while they were inside of a downtown business Tuesday afternoon.
