Sedgwick County man wanted in June 29 killing jailed after release from hospital
Authorities on Sunday arrested a Sedgwick County man on suspicion of second-degree murder and a weapons violation in connection with the shooting death last week of 25-year-old Joshua Steele.
Zachary Lee Province, 37, was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail at 5:13 p.m. on Sunday, jail records show.
“He is the only suspect” in the case, Wichita police spokesman Officer Paul Cruz said by email.
Wichita police last week said Steele and his girlfriend were at a friend’s home near 21st and Woodlawn around 5 a.m. on June 29 when two men showed up and a fight started over some property. Several shots were fired during the disturbance. Steele was struck and died in the driveway of the home, in the 6900 block of East Ayesbury Circle. The men then fled in a moving truck.
Records show Province was arrested at 550 N. Hillside, which is Wesley Medical Center’s address. Police said Monday by email that he sought treatment for a gunshot wound there and was arrested after he was released Sunday. He is being held on suspicion of murder and criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon but had not been formally charged by prosecutors as of Monday.
Province has prior convictions that landed him in prison including theft, criminal possession of a firearm, aggravated battery, fleeing from a law enforcement officer and narcotics possession, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.
Jail booking records say Province is from Valley Center. Wichita police said Monday afternoon that he is from Haysville.
