Body found during weekend search identified as missing Wichita woman, police say
A body discovered during a weekend search for missing Wichita woman Savannah Schneider is hers.
Wichita police said Monday the 23-year-old’s body has been positively identified. Her cause of death is still unclear.
A group of volunteers, including some of Schneider’s sorority sisters, found her remains in a field along railroad tracks near Haysville on Saturday morning, roughly two hours into a five-hour planned search. Police have said Schneider, who was visually impaired and unable to drive, was last seen leaving her home near 13th and Maize on May 31. She was reported missing June 4.
Saturday’s search came just days after authorities used cadaver dogs to comb an area near Haysville where Schneider’s cellphone last pinged on June 2.
“WPD investigators are currently working with the Regional Forensic Science Center to determine the circumstances of her death,” Officer Charley Davidson said in an emailed news release. The center is performing her autopsy.
