Wichita man dies after being shot by girlfriend during fight, police say

Police have identified the victim in a south Wichita shooting Tuesday as 32-year-old Rahim Omar of Wichita.

Omar was found with a gunshot wound Tuesday at the QuikTrip at Hydraulic and Wassall and was taken to a hospital, where he later died, Officer Charley Davidson said in a news release. Police originally responded to a shots-fired call at 3:40 p.m. at a home in the 2800 block of South Ida, about half a mile from where Omar was found.

While there, police spoke with Omar’s 24-year-old girlfriend, who lived at the home, Davidson said. The two were in a fight when the girlfriend grabbed a handgun and fired the shot that hit Omar, Davidson said in the news release.

“During which time, Mr. Omar did charge towards her and at one point in the disturbance broke a window on the front of the residence,” Capt. Jason Stephens said. “We have not made an arrest in the case yet.”

Omar was taken to the QuikTrip by a friend.

Stephens said there has been domestic violence calls at the residence, including calls that involved police, in the last month.

“There has been some (domestic violence) history in the past month,” Stephens said. “I can’t go into details at this point and time because we are still investigating the case, looking for witnesses and reviewing evidence.”

He said the two did not live together.
