Man charged with trying to kidnap 12-year-old girl walking in south Wichita

A Wichita man accused of trying to abduct a 12-year-old girl Saturday afternoon in the Planeview neighborhood has been charged with attempted kidnapping, drug possession and misdemeanor theft, court records show.

Police arrested 27-year-old Victor Manuel Lara-Aguilar on Saturday in the 2900 block of South Hillside. Authorities said Sunday the girl was walking alone in the area of 31st Street South and Clifton around 3:50 p.m. Saturday when Lara-Aguilar approached her, grabbed her arm and “said she was coming with him.” The girl screamed and pulled away then ran to her grandmother’s house for help. She and her mother called police, who tracked down Lara-Aguilar with the help of a physical description the child provided.

Lara-Aguilar made a first appearance in Sedgwick County District Court on the charges Wednesday and is being held in the local jail on $75,000 bond. His next court date is May 28. The public defender’s office, which has been appointed in the case, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
