Wichita man with alleged tie to vehicle break-in jailed after police pursuit

A 30-year-old Wichita man is in jail on suspicion of felony evading or eluding officers, burglary and theft after he led officers on a Sunday morning vehicle chase, police say.

Police were in the area of 21st Street North and Ridge looking for a green GMC Sierra that had been stolen from an apartment complex when they saw a tan Chevrolet Silverado thought to be associated with the theft and some vehicle break-ins reported that morning, Wichita police spokesman Officer Charley Davidson said in an emailed news release. When police tried to stop the truck around 11 a.m., the driver — who police say was Cody E. Scrimsher — fled. Police pursued him initially but stopped over his erratic driving, Davidson wrote.

Scrimsher ran from the truck after he stopped at Second and Handley and was caught after a short foot chase, police say. Davidson said police tied Scrimsher to a vehicle burglary where a GPS device was stolen in the 500 block of North Tyler.

Investigators plan to present the case to prosecutors for formal criminal charging.

Scrimsher remained in the Sedgwick County Jail on Monday morning.
