Wichita gunfight broke out as dad protected son at his home, police say
A gunfight that broke out in a Wichita neighborhood Tuesday afternoon came as a father was protecting his son at his home, police said.
Wichita police were called at around 4:45 p.m. to a disturbance with shots fired in the 1500 block of North Spruce, near 13th and Grove, Officer Charley Davidson said in a news release. Officers found a 57-year-old man at his home, as well as the man’s 32-year-old son and the son’s 19-year-old friend.
The dad told police that a group of people had come to his home and started a fight with his son, Davidson said. The dad then got a handgun to defend his son, and the attackers ran away. As they ran away, the attackers started shooting at them, and multiple gunshots were exchanged.
No injuries were reported, but the father’s house and a nearby vacant house were struck by bullets. Three suspects were found in the area.
Officers arrested 22-year-old David Hayes on suspicion of aggravated assault, 20-year-old Antwain Thomas on suspicion of aggravated assault and marijuana possession and a 16-year-old boy on suspicion of aggravated assault.
Police said the shooting was not random. The investigation is ongoing.
