Wichita man heads to prison after admitting to sex crimes and kidnapping 7-year-old

A Wichita man is headed to state prison for more than 12 years after admitting to sex crimes involving a 7-year-old victim.

Michael Wayne Cooley, 38, was sentenced Monday in Sedgwick County District Court to 147 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections, court records show.

He pleaded guilty in January to aggravated kidnapping with the intent to commit aggravated criminal sodomy and two counts of sexual exploitation of a child. The crimes happened in April 2018 and involved a 7-year-old child. The sexual exploitation charges had alleged that Cooley possessed pornographic photos or videos of a child engaging in sexually explicit conduct.

Cooley is required to register for life in the Kansas Bureau of Investigation sex offender registry. He was added to the KBI registry in January with his primary address listed as the Sedgwick County Jail.
