Man, 18, jailed for murder in brother’s fatal shooting

Wichita police said Sunday that an 18-year-old man has been jailed on suspicion of second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of his brother last week.

Idriys Norwood of Wichita was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday, according to jail records. He is being held on suspicion of murder and possession of a controlled substance.

Police in a news briefing last week said 21-year-old Israel Norwood was taken to Ascension Via Christi St. Joseph hospital around 6:50 p.m. Feb. 16 with a gunshot wound to his body that he later died from. He arrived in a 2007 Chevy Impala with two of his brothers, 18 and 17. The 18-year-old ran from the hospital at some point and was later caught by officers, police have previously said.

Officer Paul Cruz said Sunday by email that Idriys and Israel Norwood are brothers and that the shooting was not random. He did not offer a motive for the violence. Police last week said the investigation had stalled because the brothers and other family members had been uncooperative.

Police plan to present the case to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution. The investigation is ongoing, Cruz wrote.

Idriys Norwood is being held in jail in lieu of $75,000 bond.
