Extra Wichita officers will be watching for drunken drivers after the Super Bowl

Extra officers will be patrolling Wichita to look for drunken drivers after the Super Bowl on Sunday. Officers expect more people here to be watching since the Kansas City Chiefs will be playing in the championship for the first time in 50 years.

Wichita police Officer Charley Davidson said Friday that the department will use grant funding to put an extra five officers and a supervisor on patrol from 10 p.m. Sunday until 2 a.m. Monday. The money comes from a Kansas Department of Transportation grant. The department will also have its mounted unit in Old Town, but that unit won’t be using grant dollars.

The Chiefs will play the San Francisco 49ers in Miami for Super Bowl LIV. Kickoff is 5:30 p.m. Several area businesses will offer watch parties and food deals.

“We want everyone to have a good time, watch the game,” Davidson said. “But we want everyone to be able to do so safely … so, please, if you do drink, don’t drive.”
