Kansas clerk who stole more than $100,000 in taxpayer funds sentenced to prison

A former Marshall County clerk will serve 32 months in prison for spending more than $100,000 in taxpayer money on herself, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said in an emailed news release.

Sonya L. Stohs, 44, of Marysville, was sentenced Monday on one count of felony misuse of public funds. She was charged after the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Secret Service found out she spent Marshall County money on personal items between May 2013 and April 2019.

Stohs pleaded guilty in November in Marshall County District Court. After serving the prison term, she’ll spend two years on post-release supervision, Schmidt said. She also must pay $372,003.12 in restitution, plus $438 in investigative and court costs.

Marshall County is in northeast Kansas along the Nebraska border.
