Kansas man shot after trooper pursuit remains hospitalized in critical condition
A wanted man remains in critical condition in a Wichita hospital after leading officers on a Chase County pursuit Thursday that ended with him being shot at least once and bitten by a police dog, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
Dustin S. Schultz-Bergin, 40, of Olathe, was taken to Wesley Medical Center following the incident.
The pursuit started before 1:25 p.m. on Thursday when the man was spotted at the Matfield Green Service Area off I-35. The man took off north in a black Nissan Altima, the Bureau stated in a news release. A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper ahead of the chase was able to use stop sticks that disabled the man’s vehicle.
The Bureau said the “armed suspect exited his vehicle and a confrontation occurred which led one of the two troopers on scene to fire shots.” The man was hit “at least” once. He also had “several puncture wounds” from a K-9 officer.
No officer was injured.
Schultz-Bergin, whose name was released Friday afternoon, has convictions for identity theft and possession of drugs in Wyandotte and Johnson counties, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections. He was released from community corrections in October. The Bureau did not say what Schultz-Bergin was wanted for.
