WPD animal control van hits man riding handicap scooter outside Wichita police station
A man riding a handicapped electric scooter in a crosswalk outside the south Wichita police station was hurt when an animal control officer drove into him Sunday morning.
Emergency crews were called at around 8:45 a.m. to an injury accident at the intersection of Pawnee and Broadway, Wichita Police Department spokesman Officer Kevin Wheeler said in a news release. The WPD Patrol South bureau is based at the same intersection.
Officers found a 62-year-old man, who was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening wounds, police said.
Investigators determined the man was riding the handicap scooter in the crosswalk while crossing Pawnee, Wheeler said. An on-duty WPD animal control officer driving a van turned from southbound Broadway onto eastbound Pawnee and crashed into the scooter.
The investigation into the wreck is ongoing, and police will also conduct an internal investigation. Police did not identify the animal control officer.
