Wichita man admits to robbing bank with misspelled note on deposit slip
A Wichita man has admitted to robbing a bank inside a grocery store using a misspelled note written on a bank deposit slip.
The crime happened about five minutes after he had withdrawn the balance owed on his account.
Jeremy Kyle Vos, 21, pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of bank robbery, U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said in a news release. The case stemmed from the July 23 robbery of Intrust Bank inside the Dillons store at Harry and Edgemoor.
Sentencing is scheduled for March 6. He faces up to 20 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
A Federal Bureau of Investigation agent wrote in an affidavit filed in U.S. District Court that Vos had been to the same bank three times that day. The first time, a teller told him he needed his ID to get his account information. The second time, a banker gave him the balance owed on his account.
Vos then went back to the bank about five minutes later. The FBI agent said he handed the teller a misspelled handwritten note on half of a bank deposit slip.
“This is a robbery,” the note read. “No die (sic) bags. I have a gun.”
He was given less than $1,500 — including 10 bait bills — and left the business. No one was injured.
Police officers later arrested Vos at a friend’s house, where they found some of the money and the note he used to rob the bank.
Wichita police previously said Vos was also accused of making a fake bank robbery report earlier the same day. Court records show he has a history of lying to authorities about false emergencies.
He has previous felony convictions for making false emergency calls in Sedgwick County and theft and traffic violations connected to attempting to elude law enforcement in Butler County.
Kansas Department of Corrections records show Vos was listed as being under intensive supervision by community corrections at the time of the bank robbery.
