A 25-year-old wanted Wichita man was arrested Friday in connection to a fatal shooting earlier in the week.

The Wichita Police Department said they attempted to arrest Chevy Omar Jones around 5:10 p.m. on outstanding warrants and in connection with the killing of 31-year-old Robert Junior, who was found shot early Tuesday morning outside his home in the 8500 block of East Parkmont. Junior died at the hospital.

“This was not a random incident,” police said in a press release.

Officers approached Jones as he was getting into a 2002 Grand Marquis in the parking lot of an apartment building in the 2600 block of South Topeka. Jones, the release says, sped off and slammed into an officer’s squad car.

The officer was taken to the hospital, treated and released.

After hitting the police vehicle, Jones took off on foot and ran to the nearby Walmart around Pawnee and Broadway. He was arrested inside the store and had a handgun in his, the release says.

Jones was taken to the hospital because police believed he had ingested drugs. Jones was treated and released before being booked into the Sedgwick County Jail.

Jones was booked on first-degree murder, aggravated battery, criminal possession of a firearm and interference. He also was booked on a separate domestic battery case and for violating probation in two different cases. Jail records say he is also being held for another agency.

Kansas Department of Corrections records show Jones’ convictions in Sedgwick County include criminal possession of a weapon, burglary and theft. The KDOC lists Jones as an absconder as of Nov. 6. Court records show he failed to show up to probation related to the Sedgwick County convictions.
