Teen critically hurt Sunday was on skateboard being pulled by car, Wichita police say
Wichita police say a teen critically injured Sunday near Edgemoor Park was on a skateboard being pulled down the street by a car.
The 15-year-old was one of two teens holding onto a 2002 Mazda 626 by the car’s open windows when he lost control, fell off the skateboard and hit his head on the ground.
The other teen, who is also 15, let go and stopped safely on his skateboard, Wichita police Officer Charley Davidson said. The crash happened shortly before noon Sunday around Ninth and Christine. People who saw the teen hurt immediately called 911.
A 16-year-old boy was driving the car. All of the teens are friends, Davidson said.
When officers showed up they found the injured teen lying in the street getting help from a resident, Davidson said. He was taken to a Wichita hospital for treatment and remained in critical condition Monday.
“Speed and alcohol are not believed to be . . . a factor in this case,” Davidson said. “. . . The Wichita Police Department does send its thoughts and prayers to all those involved in this tragic incident.”
The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office for possible criminal charges, Davidson said, adding that “vehicles are not designed to pull somebody. They are designed to be ridden in.”
