Wichita police are looking for as many as three suspects in connection with a shooting on Broadway on Wednesday morning, authorities said.

A 41-year-old man was shot twice at about 7:15 a.m. following a confrontation in the 200 block of East 10th, Lt. James Espinoza said. He staggered to the parking lot of the Mark 8 Inn in the 1100 block of North Broadway and asked for help.

He was shot in the arm and chest and was taken to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis, where he was stabilized in the emergency room and immediately went into surgery, Espinoza said.

Investigators discovered that a bullet fired during the incident struck the Saigon Restaurant at 1103 N. Broadway, Espinoza said, but no one was hurt. The shooting occurred so early in the morning nearby schools were not placed on lockdown or otherwise affected, he said.

Police had limited details to identify suspects.

“We do believe the victim knows who did it,” Espinoza said, but investigators have not been able to talk to him because of the severity of his injuries.

Patrol cars blocked 10th Street at Broadway as well as access to the parking lots for Saigon Restaurant and a Cricket store next door for much of the morning.

“We’re interviewing several witnesses,” Espinoza said.

It was the second shooting incident in the vicinity of the Mark 8 this week. Two men shot at each other in the parking lot of the hotel at about 7 p.m. Monday, shattering a window and narrowly missing a hotel employee.

The 62-year-old employee told police he saw a man in a white compact car confront another man who was on foot. The driver fired a gun, and the other man returned fire.

Eight shots were fired, with several striking the hotel, Espinoza said. Police do not think either man was hit.

Officers with the Special Community Action Team and Community Policing have been paying attention to North Broadway in an effort to reduce crime in the area, Espinoza said.

“There is known prostitution on Broadway,” he said. “There is drug activity.

“It leads me to believe there are some people that want to cause problems over there.”
